I have always had plants in the house, and a few on the back patio, but nothing in the ground. Not for the last 10-12 years anyway. I used to help my sister plant her flowers every year, so I am no stranger to digging in the dirt. I actually ENJOY digging in the dirt to plant flowers.
This year we decided to make a little flower garden in front of our apartment. Here are some of the flowers we planted below. We are not finished by a long shot. We have got a bit of beautifying left to do. We still need to buy some mulch to spread over the whole area, and hang the swing.
‘Hibiscus Bush (Peach)’
I love Hibiscus, I think they are very pretty. There is not much to
do to them as far as care goes. You just water them every few days,
fertilize them about once a month, and keep the dead flower steam cut off.
‘Denver Daisy’
This is my first time planting Denver Daisies. I think I am going to like
them very much! Without the gorgeous yellow and orange flowers they
would look like an ugly weed growing in the ground. They will get about
18 to 24 inches tall. I planted them around the old stump (pic below),
on each side of the swing and a few in other places.
‘Geranium’
The Geranium is a beautiful flower with it’s cluster of small, bright red
flowers. It is spreading out and getting bigger each day. I am thinking
about buying some more and plating them in pots. The Geranium is
pretty easy to care for also. Just make sure you cut off the stems
of the flowers that are dieing so they don’t go to seed.
‘Petunias’
I love Petunias, they are very easy to grow. Just water them daily and
dead head the dieing flowers, so they will keep producing blooms.
I planted red and white, purple, lavender and red Petunias. I imagine
I will be planting more in the empty spaces.
‘Vinca’
I am going to be planting red and white also, here in the next week.
The flowers are very pretty.
My husband is not a carpenter (he is a painter and a very good one),
but he built the white fence to put around the flowers. When my
husband gets time he is going to dig out the top of the old stump
(see pic above) for me, and I am going to fill it with soil and
plant something in it. I have not decided what I am going to put there
just yet.
This old swing is eventually going to get hung, after I paint it
(or I may not). I haven’t decided if I am going to paint it or leave it
yellow. The stump pictured by the swing is going to be used as a table.
You can see the Denver Daisies in the picture, but they have
not gotten any flowers on them yet. Plus as I mentioned above we still
need to get some mulch, and it will look so much better. We are going
to put stones to make a walk way from the swing to the front door.
What outdoor projects are you working on (if any)? What would you plant
in the ‘old stump’ (I can’t decide)?
